Nayyarsons "Go Green" Ongoing Initiative

Nayyarsons takes pride in their ongoing “go green” efforts with Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Nayyarsons’ staff saves vegetable peelings/scraps for composting purposes and recycles cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass products. We also collect cooking oil for conversion to biofuel and offer China and silver ware to use instead of throwing away cutlery.

Every day, we serve from 600 to 800 guests in our two dining facilities, the dining hall and Center Club. Not to mention the guests who enjoy their daily wake-up calls with our Starbucks Coffee Cart.

Our Starbucks Coffee Cart enables customers to take part in the company’s socially conscious state of mind, offering a variety of post-consumer used products such as 10 percent recyclable fiber cups, recycled content cup sleeves and recycled content napkins.

By setting goals for the future, Starbucks strives to significantly reduce their environmental footprints through energy and water conservation, recycling and green construction.

For example, in 2010, their energy practices will include reducing green-house emissions by making stores 25 percent more efficient and deriving 50 percent of their energy used to be taken from renewable sources. They currently purchase from 3Degrees, who uses wind renewable energy.

Setting goals for 2015, Starbucks aims for 100 percent reusable or recyclable cups and for all their coffee to meet their “Shared Planet” ethical sourcing principles. Their chosen coffee must be grown under the highest standards of quality, using ethical trading and responsible growing practices.

Through combined sustainable efforts, we can make a positive impact on the community at BNL and beyond.
